Biblical Shavuot Revealed

Murray Thorson

Once we understand Shavuot, the biblically designated seven-day feast of rejoicing that starts at Pentecost, it will forever change how we celebrate God’s gifts and kindness to us.  Jesus, our kinsman-redeemer/savior, was born in the middle of this feast.  He was glorified at the Father’s right hand on the Pentecost following His crucifixion, resurrection, and ascension.  Simultaneously, God’s Spirit empowered His followers.  The first Shavuot celebration began fifty-seven days after the descendants of Abraham, the Hebrews, entered the land of blessing which God had promised Abraham.  It commemorated the blessings of following God’s laws and warned of judgments resulting from disobedience.  The feast occurs at the start of each summer harvest and celebrates God’s sustenance of, and blessings to, humanity.  It’s designated as a seven-day party with family, neighbors, and friends to celebrate and share God’s kindness with others.  Originally specified for the Jewish people to celebrate in the place of God’s choosing (eventually Jerusalem), today, it can be celebrated by all people who seek, know, and love God.  Come to the feast!
